Every spill or accident starts as a spot but improper treatment can
turn that spot into a nasty stain. Following a few simple steps
can help prevent that problem. However some spills will stain
regardless of what we due to remove them. Never start a spot
removal job unless you know the carpet fiber, natural or synthetic.
If the spill make up is know ie pop, coffee etc. is know the
process to remove the spot is simple. Just follow the guidelines
in your spotting kit. If you don't have a spotting kit then we
suggest that every carpet program has one or two.
For unknown spots you should prewet the spot with water and start
the removal process with solvent spot removers and move to water based
detergents as a last resort. Always remember to work the spot
remover to the center of the spot and not in a outward
direction. This prevents spreading the spot to surrounding
areas.
A common error is leaving the spot remover in the carpet.
Every spot must be rinsed thoroughly to remove the spot and spot
remover chemical. If the chemical stays in the carpet it will
attract more dirt and the spot will return. Once the spot has
been rinsed a dry towel with a weight can be applied to pull the spot
out and prevent wicking.
After all the above effort the spot may still reappear. It
happens! Just repeat the above until the spot is gone!
If all else fails you can die the carpet to hide the spot.
